Our Wild Residents

Nethergill Farm is made up of a wide variety of different habitats which are considered home to a diverse range of animals and plant life.

To further enhance the wildlife across the farm and to particularly encourage Red Squirrels, we have planted an area of 30 acres of moorland with mixed-species woodland totalling 20,000 trees in conjunction with the National Parks and Forestry Commission. The planting area runs close to Greenfield Forest which has been declared the 17th Red Squirrel reserve in Britain.

Bird Watching

Nethergill is part of an ongoing bird recording project and is home to many interesting species, including black grouse, crossbills, curlews, oystercatchers, redpolls and many more.

Visitors and guests of Nethergill are welcome to use the hides, together with self -guided farm trail and use of the Nature Barn.

Willow Hide is our larger hide overlooking Oughtershaw Beck and a scrape.

Ash Hide is half way up Mireling gill side in a copse called Victoria Wood, overlooking the source of the Wharfe and the Ribble with panoramic views over the fells.

DIY Tea, coffee and flapjack are available in the Nature Barn - payment on an honesty system (cash and card payments accepted).

Fly Fishing

Pass happy tranquil hours amid glorious Dales scenery fishing for wild brown trout in the challenging head waters of the Oughtershaw Beck, which meanders all along the front of the farmhouse. More fishing can be arranged further down the Wharfe as well, so please ring for details. To protect the local ecosystem and ensure fishing can be enjoyed by everyone, all fish must be caught using a barbless hook and returned to the Beck as quickly as possible.
